Oh, the Places You’ll Go

Today was a bit of a hard day, with a constant (but never realized) threat of heavy rain and many small waiting projects to complete.  Yesterday the tractor came by to plough our fields but had to stop due to torrential rain, just as things were drying up from the months of rain that let up a week or so ago. We’re in a holding pattern with millions of things to be done but the Great Project of prepping the fields stalled.

We just thinned out melon and squash sprouts that had better germination than we'd expected.

The night before we left for Italy, Federica and I read “Oh, The Places You’ll Go” by Dr. Seuss.  It’s a great lesson in taking life as it comes, because “Wherever you fly, you’ll be the best of the best/ wherever you go, you will top all the rest./Except when you don’t. /Because, sometimes, you won’t.”  One of the places Seuss talks about is The Waiting Place, where people are all waiting. “Waiting for a train to go/ or a bus to come, or a plane to go/ or the mail to come, or the rain to go.” We felt like that a little today.  Even though the tractor did come as evening fell, I really felt a breakthrough on one of my passes through the greenhouse as I saw all the little sprouts  that are going to town right now.  If anything, they’re waiting for me to take notice.

We’ve made markers out of yogurt containers. I eat a lot of yogurt and am looking forward to adding some of these cantelope-style melons when they’re ripe.
